Accra, Sept. 13, GNA – Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, on Tuesday toured some schools in the metropolis on “My First Day at School” to welcome new pupils to school.
The day observed on the first day of the new academic year of basic education school, was initiated by the Ministry of Education to whip up enthusiasm among pupils and encourage them to stay in school.
In addition, it would encourage children of school-going age, who are not in school, to attend school to increase enrolment at the basic level.
Mr Vanderpuije distributed school uniforms, learning materials, toffees, biscuits, pair of socks, and hand sanitizers to motivate the pupils to attend school regularly as well as to enable them study hard to achieve their aim in future.
Schools visited included Kaneshie Cluster of schools, Five Garrison Education Centre at Burma Camp, First Signal Regiment Primary school, Central Mosque, Ayalolo Cluster of schools at Adabraka, and Kaneshie A and B Methodist Primary school.
Mr Vanderpuije advised the pupils to focus on their education to enable them become good future leaders adding that it was only a disciplined child who would succeed in life.
He commended the teachers for the efforts in nurturing children for a better future and urged them to continue with their commitment to work.
Briefing newsmen after the visit, Mr vanderpuije said it was to encourage the pupils to take education serious as well as attend school regularly.
He appealed to parents to assist government to train the children by providing the necessary materials needed for their education.
Mr vanderpuije gave the assurance that uncompleted projects such as classrooms, computer laboratory, science and library blocks would be completed by next month to enable the children have sound and conducive environment to study.
“I am overwhelmed by the zeal with which the pupils, teachers and parents responded to the call,” he said.
Mr Vanderpuije appealed to parents to avoid unnecessary spending on funerals, clothes and channel their resources to the education of their children.
Mrs Pearl Awozor, Headmistress of Kaneshie Cluster of schools commended government’s commitment towards education in the country.
She appealed to government to recruit more French teachers to the metropolis to help pupils acquire knowledge in the French language.
