Tema, June 17, GNA - A non-governmental organisation has said the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) cannot be achieved in a holistic manner if the needs of children are not properly addressed. The Abibimman Foundation that promotes livelihoods, peace and development said this at a news conference in Tema on Wednesday to commemorate of Africa Union Day of the African Child.
Miss Yvonne Acheampong of the Green-Life Club, the school children arm of the Foundation, said the MDGs which government adopted in 2000 at the United Nations Summit in New York were the barest indicators to the development of the child.
She said even though Ghana had made giant strides in education through incentives, there existed a gap in quality education. Miss Acheampong said it was regrettable that the Ghanaian child was still confronted with issues bordering on child labour, trafficking and illicit sex.
She therefore urged government to resolve to stop all forms of child labour, exploitation and trafficking by enforcing the Human Trafficking Act 2005 to the letter.
Miss Acheampong appealed to government to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all children for them to grow in secured environments for sustainable future.
Government, she said, should also place employment and decent work for women and young people at the centre of its economic policies and programmes.
