Accra, May 7, GNA - A new Diocese has been carved out of the Anglican Diocese of Sekondi to be known as the Wiawso Diocese and the Venerable Abraham Kobina Ackah has been elected as the first Bishop. A statement issued in Accra by Mr S.H. Annancy, Province Chancellor of the Church of the Province of West Africa, said Venerable Ackah would be consecrated on Saturday, June 10 and enthroned at the Cathedral Church of Ascension, Sefwi Wiawso on June 11.

The consecration would be performed by the Archbishop assisted by other bishops of the province.

The statement said at the Provisional Synod in October, 2001 approval was given at the request of the Diocese of Sekondi for the carving out of the Wiawso Diocese from the Sekondi Diocese. It said the Right Rev. (Colonel) John Kwamina Otoo, Bishop of Sekondi on January 23, 2006, therefore ceded the Wiawso part of the Diocese to be a Diocese.

On February 17, 2006, the Archbishop and Primate of the Church of the Province of West Africa, Most Rev. Dr Justice Ofei Akrofi inaugurated the proposed Diocese of Wiawso.

The statement noted that subsequently, on February 18, 2006 at a special synod held in Sefwi Wiawso, Venerable Abraham Kobina Ackah was elected Bishop of the newly created Diocese.
