ActionAid Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, has donated relief items to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and flood victims in Nima, a suburb of Accra.
The items include 150 mattresses, a quantity of blankets and pillows, buckets, bags of sachet water, bags of rice, boxes of cooking oil, sanitary materials, among others.
The items were presented at the office of the Ayawaso Sub-metropolitan District Council at Nima, on Thursday morning, where they were distributed to about 82 households.
Ms Marilyn Aniwa, the chairperson of the Board of ActionAid, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to alleviating poverty and supporting persons distressed by disaster through a human rights approach.
The Country Director of ActionAid Ghana, Mr Sumaila Abdul Rahman, said the donation was not limited to victims in Nima but was part of a GH¢500,000.00 consignment of relief items to some municipalities in the Greater Accra Region, and would eventually benefit areas such as Ga West, Ga South and Ga East. “We know it is not enough but we are hoping it will support the affected persons until they recover from their losses,” he said.
Mr Daniel Mensah, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of NADMO, expressed gratitude to ActionAid for the gesture.
“We know organsations need money for their operations and we are grateful to ActionAid for not keeping all their money to themselves,” he said.
Mr Mensah said the donations might not be enough to meet the needs of the victims but appealed to them to accept the items as they were meant to demonstrate care and sympathy.
Torrential rains in Accra on June 3, caused extensive flooding and resulted in fuel leakage at the Goil Filling Station at the Kwame Nkrumah touching naked fire to cause an inferno that left 152 people officially dead.
