Adaklu Tanyigbe District capital still causes problem

Agotime-Kpetoe (V/R), Dec 03, GNA - Nene Nuer Keteku III, Konor of Agotime, on Thursday said sinister political manoeuvres aimed at embarrassing the government were at the heart of the impasse over the choice of the capital of the new Adaklu Anyigbe District.

He expressed regret that some prominent chiefs in the region had also lent support to such manoeuvres by taking sides when they ought to mediate between the people of Adaklu and Agotime who are contesting the choice of the capital.

Nene Nuer Keteku said this at a news conference at Kpetoe in reaction to an earlier one by the chiefs of Adaklu to protest the inauguration of the assembly at Kpetoe on Tuesday, November 30.

This prompted the Ho Municipal Assembly to call off the ceremony. He said, "As rightly pointed out by President John Agyekum Kufuor at Hohoe recently, the creation of political institutions is the preserve of government and not chiefs."

"This is a test of the Rule of Law", Nene Nuer Keteku said. The impasse revolves around L.I. 1741 which designated Adaklu-Waya as the capital of the new district and L.I. 1807 which designated Kpetoe as the capital.

Nene Nuer Keteku said, "In Executive Instrument number 9 (creation of Districts Instrument 2003), Cabinet created the Adaklu Anyigbe District with its capital sited at Kpetoe."

"The District Assemblies were created for the development of the rural areas. The government is aware that there are specific features that would promote the take-off of the district", he said. 03 Dec 04
