The Adansi North District Assembly has taken steps to tackle post-harvest losses in the area through aggressive promotion of food processing technology.
The farmers are being assisted to process fruits and vegetables into jam, margarine and soft drinks.
The Assembly is doing this in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with the Japanese providing the technology.
Alhaji Abdul Lateef Majdoub, the District Chief Executive (DCE), who announced this at a ceremony at Fomena, to reward hard working farmers in the district, said feeder roads there were also being improved to make it easier to evacuate farm produce to marketing centres.
The event was held under the theme, “Eat what you grow”.
In all, 22 commodity farmers and fishermen including a physically challenged and three women were honoured with prizes for their contribution towards the development of agriculture.
They received knapsack spraying machines, cutlasses, radio sets, flashlights, wellington boots, key-bar soap and certificates.
The overall best farmer award went to 48-year-old Mr. Dominic Frimpong of Dinkyie and for this, he carried home a refrigerator, 10 bags of organic fertilizers, knapsack sprayer, radio set, a pair of wellington boots, cutlasses and a certificate.
The Reverend John Manu, District Director of Agriculture, advised farmers to adopt improved farming methods to boost crop yield.
He appealed to the research institutions to continue to work hard to produce high-yielding planting materials.
