Adwoa Safo wants bridge reconstructed

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Dome/Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo, has appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highway to urgently reconstruct the collapsed bridge linking Atomic roundabout to Dome in her constituency, which collapsed on June 17, 2014 as a result of a heavy downpour.

She said the current condition of the bridge had led to the temporary closure of the main Dome road that leads to Taifa and Achimota/St John’s road with traffic jam becoming unbearable on the alternative routes.

The Dome/Kwabenya MP made the appeal on the floor of Parliament recently when she made a statement on the plight of her constituents following the collapse of the bridge. She said it was one of the several bridges in the constituency which had not seen maintenance since it was constructed by the Ga East Municipal Assembly in 2003.

According to her, the bridge connects to a number of schools and churches in the area and that any delay in its reconstruction would disrupt the education of the school children and continue to create inconveniences to motorists and the residents.

“The Department of Urban Roads inspected the bridge after incessant complaints by residents, and promised to reconstruct it but the Department of Highway intervened later and said it was a project designated for its outfit,” she said, adding that the Ministry of Roads and Highway should ensure that the appropriate department executes the job to alleviate the suffering of the people of Dome/Kwabenya.

Contributing to the statement, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Lambussie/Karni, Edward Kaale-Ewola Dery, said the main Dome road in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency was in such a deplorable state that it could take several hours to ply it; and therefore appealed to the government to construct the road so as to ease traffic.
