Due to lack of teachers in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District, one teacher has been handling seven classes, being from kindergarten to primary six at the Yirenka District Assembly Primary School.
The teacher of the school, Mr Theophilos Ayetteh, who received a solar lamp, was among the 46 basic, second cycle education workers, who were honoured at the first Best Teacher Award Day of the Kwahu Afram Plains South District at Tease .
The honoured workers received items ranging from table top refrigerators, flat screen television sets, standing fans, solar lamps, high density mattresses, a double decker refrigerator and certificates.
Three second cycle students, Joseph Abrokwa Senior and Junior, twin brothers and Aa-Dliney who obtained aggregate seven, ten and 12 in last year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) also received deserving awards.
Mrs Elizabeth Amankwaa, the District Director of Education, commended the over 600 teachers and non-teaching staff of her directorate for their contribution saying it has raised the educational standards in the District.
She said the District, created three years ago, scored 57.1 percent in the 2014 BECE and 78 percent this year with two students obtaining aggregate seven; with Saint Fidelis, the only Senior High School (SHS) in the District, being ranked the third best SHS in the Eastern Region.
Mrs Amankwaa said challenges facing education in the area included: lack of classroom blocks, office and residential accommodation for teachers, inadequate teachers, lack of motorbikes and vehicles for effective monitoring and supervision by circuit supervisors.
She commended the education development partners in the district which included Global Partnership in Education Grant of the World Bank, World Vision Ghana, UNICEF, the Afram Rural Bank, the District Assembly and the Member of Parliament for the area for their various contributions.
Mr Ibrahim Isaka, the District Chief Executive, in an address read on his behalf, said the awards would serve as a motivation for education workers and help raise the standard of education in the District.
He said the Assembly would continue to provide the needed infrastructure and other requirements to enhance effective teaching and learning in the schools.
