Under water tree felling operations on the Volta Lake in the Afram corridors of the Eastern Region is destroying sources of livelihood and endangering fishing communities’ survival.

A statement signed by Ransford Owusu Boakye, Eastern Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday has said.

The statement said the activities were seriously affecting the living standard of the numerous people at the vulnerable communities and want pragmatic measures taken against the practice.

“Not only are the lives of adults and communities being at stake, but also, our children’s education is at a higher risk and we are pleading with government to come to our aid”, it added.

It said agitated youth in the communities were planning a demonstration against the activities and therefore it would appreciate if government and other bodies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the company engaged on the project would all be brought to a stakeholders meeting to reconcile positions and ensure the interest of all were protected.
