Agogo Campus of PUC launched

Konongo (Ash), Dec. 7, GNA - The Asante-Akim Campus of the Presbyterian University College (PUC), was on Saturday launched at a ceremony at Konongo.

The campus, which is to be located at Agogo, has been designated as the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the university, which has two other campuses at Abetifi-Kwahu and Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region.

It is expected to admit its first batch of students in October 2004.

In an address read for him, the Right Reverend Dr Sam Prempeh, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, recounted the numerous contributions the church had made towards the growth and development of education, especially at the basic and secondary levels.

He said the vision of the university was to blend discipline, high moral standards and academic excellence to produce the human resources required for the accelerated development of the nation.

Rt. Rev Prempeh said the establishment of the campus at the Asante-Akim area posed a challenge to the pupils in the area to study hard to enable them to gain admission into the university.

Mr George Frimpong, District Chief Executive for Asante-Akim North, said the establishment of the campus in the district would help absorb students who might not get admission into the traditional universities in the country.

He pledged the support of the assembly to the growth and development of the university and urged the people to contribute their quota to support it.

Professor K. Sraku-Lartey, Principal of the PUC, said the university, which had already begun with 40 students at the Abetifi Campus would be officially launched in January 2004.

He appealed to the people to assist the church to ensure the early opening of the campus in the area.

Mr Alex Kwaku Korankye, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante-Akim South, commended the Presbyterian Church for its contributions towards the growth of education in the country.

He said the government welcomed initiatives of churches and other private individuals in the provision of quality tertiary education to the people.
