Ahabaso Local Authority Primary School hit by hunger

Due to feeding problems, pupils of Ahabaso Local Authority Primary School in Upper-Manya Krobo District are often forced to close early to satisfy their hunger at home.

To compound the challenge there are no food vendors on campus while water to drink is also scarce.

The school is located in a deprived rural community and has a kindergarten and primary one to six.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) Media Auditing and Development Tracking team came across the school during a visit.

The team noted that, some of the children come to school on empty stomachs and so cannot concentrate on their lessons.

The GNA programme is being sponsored by STAR-Ghana, a multi-donor pooled agency to monitor public projects to ensure sustainability, transparency and accountability.

Some of the teachers who spoke to the GNA team on condition of anonymity said, the school population is not consistent due to the challenges facing the school, however, a recent Tigo programme that provided lunch once in a while increased the pupils population from 90 to 250.

They therefore called for the introduction of Ghana School Feeding Programme in the school, to attract pupils to the school.

The team noticed that another problem facing the school and the community is scarcity of water as a stream which is about three kilometres away is their main source of supply.

A six-year old kindergarten pupil who spoke to GNA said, she ate yam which was left over the previous day in the morning before coming to school and since then she had not eaten anything again.

She also complained of thirst.
