Akropong School for the blind scored over 90 per cent at BECE

Akropong-Akuapem(E/R), Oct. 26, GNA- The Akropong School for the Blind scored over 90 per cent at this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The best student had aggregate 12, while the worse student had aggregate 31 and 26 out of the 28 students presented for the examination by the school gained admission to various second cycle schools in the country. This was disclosed by the Guidance and Counseling Co-ordinator of the School, Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzi on Wednesday when the school children of Agyiri Nyarko School Complex of Ashiaman Jericho made a presentation to the school.

The presentation included loaves of bread, oranges, five cartons of toilet rolls, two cartons of carbolic soap and a cash of three million cedis.

He said the school, which started 61 years ago with three children, now has over 300 students and runs courses from kindergarten to JSS three based on syllabi prescribed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for basic schools in the country.

Mr. Homadzi said the school also has programme for adults who got blind later in life.

Presenting the items on behalf of the school children of Agyiri Nyarko School Complex, the headteacher of the school, Mr Emmanuel Akuffo Nyarko said some time ago, some teachers from Europe visited the school to distribute learning materials donated by school children in Europe for school children in the developing world.

This made the school management to also think that if some school children could think of them, it was time they also think of how to reach out to other less privileged children than them.

He said after discussions with the Parent/Teachers Association (PTA) of the school and the pupils, the pupils decided to make silver collections at their Wednesday worships to be used for their outreach programme.

Mr Nyarko said, from the silver collections, the school management added some amount and was used to acquire the items and cash which was presented to the school for the blind.

Receiving the cash and the items on behalf of the School, the Senior House Mistress of the School for the Blind, Ms. Rejoice Awuku thanked the teachers and pupils of Agyiri Nyarko School Complex for their presentation and assured them that the donation would be used for the students of the Akropong School for the Blind.

Later, pupils of De-Youngsters School of Accra also presented a cash of five million cedis to the Akropong School for the Blind as part of activities marking the silver jubilee celebration of the school. Speaking to the press after the presentation, Mr. Emmanuel Deregah, Headmaster of the Kokomleme Branch of the De-Youngsters School who led the pupils said, the pupils of his school had made similar donations to some institutions for less privileged people in the country.

He mentioned some of the institutions that had benefited from the silver jubilee package of the school, as Osu Children's Home, Accra Children's Hospital and Mampong-Akuapem School for the Deaf.
