Akyem Abodom (E/R), Aug. 19, GNA - The Akyem Abodom Students and Associates (ABOSA), has improved conditions at the Akyem Abodom Market by concreting the floor of the market.

Speaking at the second anniversary celebration of ABOSA on Thursday, Mr Clement Adjei-Ofori, President of the Association said proceeds from the first anniversary fund-raising were used for that project.

He thanked the carpenters and masons of the town for their assistance during the project at a cost of GH¢ 600.00.

Mr Adjei-Ofori said during the past year, members of the association held counselling session with parents to determine which of their wards should go for apprenticeship and which should enter second cycle schools and the courses to offer.

He believed those activities had made citizens, especially parents and wards conscious of what step to take in life with regard to education.

Mr Adjei-Ofori said the association had also been undertaking clean-up exercises on some principal streets of the town whenever members were on vacation.

He said by so doing, diseases which could occur as a result of unclean environment had been prevented and participants were advised to keep their homes and environment clean.

On achievements of ABOSA, Mr Adjei-Ofori said with the encouragement from the association, more youth were entering into apprenticeship such as hairdressing, dressmaking, carpentry and masonry.

He said some of the youth were progressing to senior high schools and tertiary institutions and that those who did not do well in the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination were being encouraged to re-write to enable them to enter tertiary institutions.

The president said ABOSA through its commitment to the cause of education in the community partnered with a non-governmental organization, Think Education Ghana, which also sought to entrench education in Ghana,

to support and undertake joint projects and programmes with ABOSA.

Mr P.T. Amponsah, an educationist, described education as being "heavier than gold," which could elevate the poor to a new improved status.

He said parents should show greater concern for the welfare of their wards by giving them more support than was the case at the moment.
