Algerian Ambassador calls on Regional Minister

Accra, June 1, GNA - Sheik Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, on Thursday urged Algeria to assist Ghana in waste management to improve sanitation in major cities in the country. He said Algeria had well-built cities with superb environmental management and sanitation systems and expressed the need for exchange of technical know-how to be shared with Ghana to improve upon her sanitation.

Sheikh Quaye said this when the Ambassador of the Peoples' Democratic Republic of Algeria, Mr Lakhal Benkelai paid an official visit to him in his office. He said the two countries had been friends since the struggle for independence and had kept the good relationship together till date. "At present, the struggle is not for political survival but for economic independence and to bring peace and happiness to our people," he said, and called for exchange of ideas and trade between the two nations.

Sheikh Quaye also called for more support in the acquisition of insecticides to augment the fight against malaria in the country. He said the Greater Accra Region had started spraying water bodies that act as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and described the exercise it as successful.

Mr Benkelai said his mission was to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and recounted their struggle through independence to the total liberation of Africa. 01 June 06
