Aliu calls for Japanese expertise to boost Science and Technology

Accra, Aug. 26, GNA - Vice President Aliu Mahama, welcoming 12 Japanese Volunteers to Ghana, on Thursday, urged Japan to send more of her experts in Science and Technology to help Ghana's industrial growth. He said Japan achieved her advanced status of development mainly through the prioritisation of Science and Technology and stressed that sharing this experience with Ghana would push her progress too.

The Volunteers, who would serve for two years, would teach Mathematics, Science, Dressmaking and other subjects in rural communities in the Eastern, Volta, Western, Northern and the Upper West Regions.

Vice President Mahama commended the contribution of the Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Program (JOCVP) to Ghana's socio-economic growth, especially in rural areas.

He said the focus on the teaching of Science and Mathematics, particularly in rural areas, was significant because it was in line with Ghana's vision to use Science and Technology as a catalyst for accelerated development.

The Vice President told the Volunteers that they would feel at home with the peace and hospitality in Ghana and urged them to exchange cultural values with the people in their communities.

"As future leaders of Japan we expect you to use your understanding of Ghana to influence your country's policy on Ghana and become our ambassadors when you return home," he said.

The Volunteers took turns to express their expectations of making positive impact in the communities they would serve.

The JOVCP started in Ghana in 1977 and 771 volunteers have since been sent to Ghana.
