The chiefs and people of Anfoega Dzana in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region are to construct a 12-unit water closet public toilet through communal labour to end the rising phenomenon of open defecation in the community.
The community, at a social auditing programme organised by the District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), unanimously agreed to construct the facility and promote environmental cleanliness.
Some individuals have made frantic efforts to construct household toilets but argued public ones were needed for visitors and for use at public gatherings.
The community also agreed to build a clinic to promote good health, especially maternal and infant health.
Concerns were also raised about the increasing pedestrian knockdowns by speeding vehicles and the need to engage the Ghana Highways Authority for devices to reduce speed of vehicles in communities in the area.
Togbui Ahlih Kotoko IV, Chief of the area said land was available for the projects and that funds realised from the 2019 Easter celebration would be invested in them.
Some artisans in the community said they were ready to work on the project for free or for a heavily discounted fee.
A seven-member works committee was inaugurated to oversee the project, which would be monitored by the traditional authorities, the District Assembly, and the NCCE.
The social auditing forum forms part of the second phase of the Accountability Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, being implemented by the NCCE with funding support from the European Union.
Madam Adelaide Quarshie, North Dayi District Director of the Commission implored the community to be upright and guard against acts of corruption in the society.
She also asked them to uphold strict environmental cleanliness to prevent disease outbreaks.
