Obuasi (Ash), May 17, GNA - AngloGold has approved five billion cedis for the expansion and improvement of facilities at the AngloGold Ashanti hospital at Obuasi following its merger with Ashanti. The expansion programme which forms the first phase of a major rehabilitation project aimed at modernising the hospital, is also designed to address the current congestion and promote better medical services to patients.

It is also aimed at enhancing patients' flow since the cu rrent situation where in and out patients are mixed up at certain points is not the best.

The Reverend E.K. Ackon, Medical Services Manager of the hospital, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Obuasi at the weekend that some vital medical equipment, which are currently lacking at the hospital would be purchased to improve services to employees and their dependants, as well as members of the public.

Rev Ackon said under the programme, the hospital's second theatre would be equipped with lamps, anaesthetic machine, incubators and other equipment.

The hospital would also be provided with electro cardiogram machine to facilitate proper heart examination and more maternity delivery beds. The Medical Services Manager said expansion works would be carried out at the casualty and maternity wings and other sections to transform the hospital into a modern health facility.

Rev Ackon said there would be a new system where oxygen would be piped from a main source to the wards, instead of carrying cylinders about to the wards as pertained presently.

He gave the assurance that drawings for the expansion works were being carried out while an order would soon be placed for the procurement of the second theatre equipment.
