Tarkwa (W/R), Aug. 24, GNA - Anglogold Ashanti (Iduapriem) Limited, has donated 25 computers to the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Basic School.

Mr David Kwesi Renner, Managing Director of Anglogold Ashanti announced this at the Silver Jubilee and Speech and Prize- Giving Day celebration of UMaT Basic School held at Tarkwa. He hoped that more of younger children would be introduced to computers to whip up their interest for future benefits. Mr Renner encouraged the pupils and students to study hard, play hard and refrain from engaging in anti-social acts. "Aim to be either the first or with the first to secure a better future, because the effort you put in today, will determine your future." Mr Renner advised the school children.

He however, regretted that some internal structures, such as discipline, which was a pre-requisite for sound education and advancement, seem to be lacking among some teachers and pupils. Mr Renner said these days, it is common to read from media reports and stories on deviant practices such as drunkenness, truancy and sexual harassment among some teachers, adding, "we were all horrified recently, on hearing of an incident, where a teacher was alleged to have asked children to lick his blood to demonstrate their honesty over a stealing incident." "The implication of such acts surely sends wrong signals, which are detrimental in the training up of the child." He said. Mr Renner said such problems are further compounded by the low remuneration of teachers that has led to perennial industrial actions for salary increases. This re-enforces the need to address the impracticable notion that the "teacher's wages are in heaven". He added. 24 Aug. 05
