Iduapriem (W/R), Dec 7, GNA - Management of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem mine, near Tarkwa, has donated sports equipment and computers valued at 62,000 dollars to four schools in the Wassa West district. The Schools were Adiyie Local Authority and Tebrebie Basic Schools, which received assorted sports kit valued at a total 26,000 dollars while two others - the University of Mines and Technology Basic School and Fiaseman Secondary Schools received computers and accessories estimated at 32,000 dollars.

Presenting the computers to the schools, David Renner, Managing Director of the Iduapriem Mine, said the donation was in line with the Mine's commitment to uplift education in the District. "Contrary to the misconception being peddled around that the mining companies have not done much for the communities, AngloGold Ashanti would continue to invest in those areas of education, health and agriculture, which are relevant to the company's business activities and the communities". He said the Mine has been investing in the communities in the form of providing potable drinking water, basic medical care centre, schools and capacity building.

Mr Renner said the Iduapriem Mine was constructing a block of classroom valued at 60,000 dollars for the people of Abupuniso, a farming community. He called on the people to invest in the education of their children. Mr. Emmanuel Ofori, headmaster of the Adieyie Basic Schools, was very grateful to the Iduapriem Mine and said the donation had come at the appropriate time and would use the kits at their school competitions.
