Angry Mob Holds Up Traffic On Road

Mon, 17 Feb 2003 Source: .

Angry youth and residents of Nsoatre, near Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, went on rampage at the weekend and blocked the main Sunyani-Berekum trunk road after a taxicab allegedly knocked down a young girl and sped away.

For several hours the mob burnt vehicle tyres on the road to prevent vehicles from Sunyani or Berekum from passing through the town.

The action of the cabdriver incensed the mob to take the law into their hands and blocked the road to express their displeasure.

High-ranking government officials including Ministers and prominent politicians attending the final funeral rites of the son of the Inspector General of Police, Nana Owusu Nsiah at Berekum were held up by the agitated youth for hours, as their vehicles were unable to pass through the town.

The Ghana News Agency quoted a Senior Police Officer, as saying that the mob forcefully demanded and collected monies from occupants of passing vehicles for the construction of speed ramps.

It took the intervention of Police reinforcement from Sunyani to support the Police at Nsoatre to bring the situation under control.

A resident of the town said there had been several knockdowns of pedestrians in the town since the road was asphalted some years ago but continuous appeals to the authorities for the construction of speed ramps at both entries of the town to slow down vehicles had not been heeded to.
