Anomabo Traditional Council to honour prominent departed citizens

Anomabo (C/R), Oct. 19, GNA - The mortal remains of Mr Ekem Fergusson, a surveyor and an abolitionist of the obnoxious slave trade is to be brought from Wa in the Upper West Region to his home town, Anomabo for a fitting burial in February next year.

The burial of the Mr Fergusson, who was killed in Wa while fighting for the abolition of the slave trade, forms part of activities planned by the Anomabo Traditional Council to honour, posthumously some prominent citizens of the town.

Mr Fergusson was also instrumental in the drawing of the map of the Gold Coast.

Nana Egyir Aggrey, Mpontuhene of the area announced this at a durbar to climax this years Okyir festival at Anomabo in the Central Region.

Nana Aggrey said Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, a scholar and an advocate for girl-child education, Nana Tufaantse Amoonu V, of the Fante Confederation who signed the Bond of 1844 and the only chief who accompanied King Prempeh I of Ashanti to the Seychelles when the King was exiled by the British to the Island would also be honoured. Nana Aggrey said the planners of the Golden Jubilee celebration for Ghana's independence had agreed to factor the honour ceremonies into the national programme and had reserved February 2007 for the people of Anomabo.

Nana Ato Arthur, Central Regional Minister, commended the people of the town for cultivating a new spirit of togetherness and urged them to use it to transform the community.

He announced that due to the roles Anomabo and Saltpond played in the struggle for independence of the then Gold Coast, the two communities would be given a place in the history of the Gold Coast and this would be duly placed on record during Ghana's Golden Jubilee anniversary.

The Regional Minister announced that the roads in the two towns would be rehabilitated before the anniversary.

Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, Mfantseman District Chief Executive, advised the people to involve the District Assembly in its programmes since it would assume a national character.

In a welcoming address Nana Amoonu XI, chief of Anomabu appealed for the rehabilitation of facilities at the Kwegyir Aggrey Secondary School.
