Mr Sam Ayeh-Datey, Coordinating Director of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has expressed concern about the apathy being shown by some residents of Accra towards the National Sanitation Day exercise.

He said this would not help to ensure a clean environment in the metropolis.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency whilst participating in a clean-up exercise, Mr Ayeh-Datey said the AMA alone cannot address the numerous environmental challenges of the city.

He urged the public to desist from politicizing environmental issues since it undermined the national effort at combating the problem.

Mr Ayeh-Datey said an attitude change is needed to help ensure a good environment and called on the media to help revive the communal spirit in the people to make them more responsive to environmental concerns.

Mr Anthony Mensah, Waste Management Director of the AMA, said there is the need to have a strong commitment, effective and sustained hygiene education to change the perceptions of the populace.

‘’ Cholera is becoming an epidemic in some parts of the Central Region hence the need to create more awareness on good hygiene and a healthy environment’’, he said.
