The people of Apedwa in the East Akyem District have embarked on a peace march to demonstrate their commitment to peace after the Supreme Court verdict on Thursday.
Clad in National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic (NPP) paraphernalia, members of the community including elderly persons and the youth and leaders of the two political parties, marched through the main roads of the town.
The Abuakwa North constituency and Abuakwa South constituency executives of the NDC and NPP, who addressed the crowd at the forecourt of the Apedwa palace, told the people that the Supreme Court verdict must be accepted to ensure peace.
Nana Asantewaa Aboagyewaa, Queen of Apedwa, said political affiliation should not create division and that whichever way the verdict would go, should be in the interest of Ghana.
She said the “law is in the bosom of the judges” and nobody should attempt to undermine the verdict of the court to ensure peace and unity which the country needed for development.
The Abuakwa South NPP organizer, Mr Obiri Yeboah, said the march was organized by the NDC and NPP leadership to demonstrate to their supporters and followers that “we are ready to accept the verdict”.
He said, often leaders of both parties were on good terms, but their followers and supporters at the grassroots fought and so wanted to demonstrate to them that they are all one.
Mr Kwasi Awuah, the Assemblyman for the area, said no party leadership would condone acts of violence of its supporters after the verdict, and that everyone should remain calm.
