Appiagyei expresses concern about social vices in the society

Kumasi, May 28, GNA - Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, on Sunday expressed concern about the increase in social vices such as indiscipline, drug addiction, trafficking and HIV/AIDS that had affected the country's socio-economic development. She therefore urged musicians, singing groups and unions to compose songs that would address these problems in the society. Madam Appiagyei made the observation when speaking at a thanksgiving service to mark the 54th Annual Convention of Asante Presbytery of Presbyterian Church of Ghana Singing Bands' Union in Kumasi.

The three-day convention attended by over 700 delegates was under the theme, "The Role of Singing Band".

She commended the church for its vital role in the socio-economic development in the country especially in health, education and the agricultural sectors and urged other churches to emulate them. Madam Appiagyei appealed to the union to adopt effective strategies to improve its performance to have a positive impact in society. Reverend Otuo Acheampong, Chairman of Asante Presbytery of the church, in a sermon stressed the need for churches to intensify evangelism to help change the attitudes of people to win more souls for Jesus Christ.

He noted that crisis in the country and the world required the union to play a vital role to help reduce social vices in the society. Mr Kyei Mensah Yamoah, President of the Union, said the union was determined to use music to ensure growth and development of the church and society.

Nana Agyen Frimpong, Tafohene advised the union to use music to help transform the society. 28 May 07
