Asante-Mampong records reduction in road accidents

Mampong (Ash), Feb. 18, GNA - An intensive road safety education mounted= by the Ghana Police Service in the Asante-Mampong Municipality has begun to pa= y off with the number of road accidents on the decline.

There was a total of 87 accident cases last year, compared with the 100 recorded in 2009.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Benjamin Kwadwo Gyasi, Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, told the Ghan= a News Agency that the number of casualties, however, went up. Nineteen people were killed last years as against 13 the previous year. He said 177 vehicles were involved in the accidents, citing lack of maintenance, worn out tyres and the inability of some drivers to interpret road signs and markings as the cause.

DSP Gyasi vowed that the police would strictly enforce road traffic rules and regulations to ensure discipline and make travelling safe. He said the police was acting in concert with the various transport associations to organise educational programmes to keep drivers abreast of traffic regulations.
