Kumasi, Oct. 17, GNA - The Reverend Otuo Acheampong was on Saturday elected Chairman of the Asante Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at an emergency presbytery in Kumasi.

He replaces the Rev Dr Yaw Frimpong-Manso, who has been elected the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

Rev Acheampong polled 57 of the 98 votes cast to beat Rev D.K. Anokye, Clerk of the Asante Presbytery, who had 34 votes and Rev Kwasi Kumi who polled seven votes.

Explaining the need for the emergency meeting to elect his successor, Rev Dr Frimpong-Manso said the election was originally scheduled for November 6, 2004.

He said, however, that it became necessary to shift the date forward since he had to liaise with the out-going Moderator to have a feel of his duties and also to enable the Chairman who would be elected to under-study him before he left finally.

Based on this, Rev Dr Frimpong-Manso said the Council thought it prudent to elect the Chairman earlier and therefore settled on October 16.

The out-going Asante Presbytery Chairman expressed thanks to God for the peaceful manner the election was conducted and said the election of Rev Acheampong was the will of God.

He called for unity of members and their co-operation with the Chairman-elect to advance the activities of the Church.
