Ashaiman Methodist Schools celebrates John Wesley Day

Ashaiman, May 24, GNA - Rt Rev Kwaku Asamoah-Okyere, the Superintendent of the Ashaiman Circuit of the Methodist Church, on Tuesday reiterated the need for the missionary churches to have full control over their schools to help improve discipline. He also called for partnership between the government and the churches to enhance the smooth running of the schools.

''If the churches have firmer control over the running of the missionary schools they can also have control over who should teach in their schools.''

Rt Rev Asamoah-Okyere was addressing pupils and students of the three Methodist schools at Tema at a church service to mark the celebrations of John Wesley's Day at Ashaiman.

He deplored the system of posting non-Christians to missionary schools because they do not understand the rules and principles and therefore cannot enforce discipline.

The programme, which formed part of the 170th Anniversary of the Methodist Church, was preceded by a route march by the children through the main streets of Ashaiman.

He said the churches, when given the mandate to run the schools, could not alone bare all the responsibilities and suggested assistance from the government to pay teachers whiles the Ghana Education Service uses its Inspectorate Division to supervise their activities. The Ashaiman Circuit of the Church is putting up a three- storey 18-classroom junior secondary school block in Ashaiman.
