Ashaiman youth protest against dusty road

Some Ashaiman youth residing at the ‘Night Market’, a suburb of Ashaiman, on Monday morning blocked portions of the road linking the main lorry station to Lebanon in protest against its dusty nature.

The youth who called themselves 'Concerned Citizens of Ashaiman', numbering over 100, blocked the road with wooden objects and a concrete mixer to prevent vehicles from plying the road at about 0700 hours Monday morning.

It took a team of police officers from the Ashaiman Divisional Police patrol team a long time to convince the protestors to open the road for free flow of traffic.

Mr Osman Umar Osabutey, a member of the group told the Ghana News Agency at the scene that they decided to block the road due to the inability of the contractor to either speed up work on the road or water it for their safety.

Mr Osabutey added that the dust was so unbearable that their rooms and goods in shops located near the road were all covered with dirt.

He further stated that due to the dusty nature of the road, petty traders could not sell their wares at the roadside while their children often fell sick.

He lamented that the construction of that road which commenced about four years ago had seen no positive end even though the government kept promising them of asphalting the road.

Mr Osabutey further said the Ashiaman municipality also deserved some development just like other districts in the country.

Alhaji Moro, a leader of the Concerned Youth of Ashaiman said they had informed the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to ensure that the contractor constantly watered the road to minimise the dust.

He indicated that the youth would continue with the blockade until the contractor started watering the dusty road.
