Kumasi, July 6, GNA - The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) in Ashanti recorded a total of 6,820 cases of road accidents involving 10,821 vehicles at different locations in the region between 2003 and 2005.

ASP Joseph Antwi Ababio, Deputy Regional Commander of the MTTU, who made this known in an interview with the GNA in Kumasi on Wednesday, said 902 cases of the accidents, which were fatal, resulted in the deaths of 1,349 people while 7,811 victims sustained various degrees of injuries.

ASP Antwi said in view of the fact that most of the accidents occurred as a result of reckless driving, the MTTU was liaising with stakeholders in the transport industry to sensitise drivers to kick against the trend and be responsive to motor traffic regulations.

He called on commercial drivers to endeavour to constantly upgrade their skills and knowledge on motor traffic issues with the view to building their capacity and efficiency on the road.

This, he said would help to prevent reckless driving and accidents that emanated from some driver's ignorance about basic traffic regulations. He said, "drivers should at all times shun the wanton disrespect for traffic regulations to save precious lives".

ASP Antwi-Ababio indicated that, the MTTU was of the conviction that curbing road accidents was a shared responsibility and would therefore continue to brainstorm with stakeholders to find an antidote to the incessant indiscipline exhibited by some drivers on the road.
