Ashesi University has won the maiden edition of Model Democracy Debate, an inter-university debate tournament on national development held at the British Council in Accra.
The winning school, Ashesi University was awarded GHC3000.00, a plaque certificates and tablets, University of Ghana took home GHC2000.00 certificates and tablets.
GIJ who came 3rd together with other participating universities also were certificates and tablets.
The 2016 Model Democracy inter-school Debate Tournament organized by Edufair Ghana Foundation was judged by Senior Research Officer – IDEG, Dr. Kwesi Jonah and Vice President, Marketing, Research and Corporate affairs – The Royal Bank, Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh. Giovanna of Starr FM was the moderator for this year’s edition.
The event was honoured by the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
This year’s debate had two representatives each from Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ashesi University, Zenith University College, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Ghana (Legon) and Lancaster University.
The first round of the debate saw University of Ghana, Zenith College and Lancaster University debate why Ghana as a nation should encourage Winner takes All (WTA) political system for national development while GIJ, UPSA and Ashesi University were of the view that Proportional Representation of political parties in a government will aid in sustainable development.
Although all the debaters raised good points to support their arguments in the first round Zenith College and Lancaster University did not make it to the next round of the tournament.
As the debate got interesting in round two, University of Ghana still pushed for Winner Take All system of government whereas Ashesi together with GIJ and UPSA were for Proportional Representation. At the end of the second round University of Ghana and Ashesi University came 1st and 2nd respectively, kicking GIJ and UPSA out of the 2016 Model Democracy debate competition.
In the final round, Ashesi won the debate with 87 points and University of Ghana followed with 70 points.
The maiden edition of the tournament attracted The Royal Bank as headline sponsor.
