Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Assembly constructs school blocks

Breman Asikuma (C/R), Oct. 13, GNA - The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa Disrict Assembly has constructed 46 blocks of classrooms at a cost of billions of cedis since the New Patriotic Party Government took office in 2001.

Mr Sampson Kwame Anfako, District Chief Executive, announced this when he led newsmen to inspect educational, health, road and water projects.

He said each of the 23 blocks of six classrooms cost 300 million cedis while that of the 23 blocks of three classrooms was 175 million cedis each.

Mr Anfako said when the Government took office, eight schools in the District obtained zero per cent in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), adding that, as a result of improved infrastructure more than 60 per cent of the students qualified to enter second-cycle institutions this year.

He described this year's results as very encouraging, saying: "This has been achieved through the provision of desks, teaching materials and the sponsorship of teacher-trainees."

The DCE said a large tract of land had been acquired at Breman Awiam under the Rural Enterprise Project for the cultivation of an oil palm plantation to provide jobs for the youth. He said the establishment of cottage industries would stem the rural-urban drift and lead to the creation of wealth to reduce rural poverty.

The DCE stated that the Assembly had drilled 150 boreholes in the communities and a surgical theatre at the Breman Brakwa Health Centre. The Assembly had opened an Internet Caf=E9 to enable students and pupils in the District to become computer literate while the Spacefon telephone network had been extended to Asikuma, the District capital, he said.

Mr Anfako stated that the Government was determined to improve the living standards of the people and had "kept faith with the people," adding that the people would return the NPP to power. He said feeder roads in the District had also been reshaped to facilitate the evacuation of farm produce to the marketing centres.
