Assemblies asked to involve CBOs in poverty alleviation activities

Suhum, Dec. 4, GNA - The Abibiman Sankofa Cultural Movement (ASCUM), a community-based organization (CBO) in the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District, has appealed to the Assembly to involve members of CBOs in poverty reduction activities.

The chairman of the CBO, Mr Freeman Madji, made the appeal on Thursday, at the official inauguration of the ASCUM. The CBO which was established in 1993 had its membership drawn from 18 communities in the district to work towards the development of the area.

He said members of the group, engaged in farming, gari processing, palm oil extraction and livestock rearing and other in income generating activities.

Mr Madji appealed to the Assembly to grant loans to members of the Association to enable them to expand their economic activities. He said ASCUM had sensitised members on the need to save at banks, saying all of them had bank accounts into which a minimum of 5,000 cedis was paid every week.

Mr Madji said the CBO had initiated plans to construct affordable houses for members from its own internally generated funds and called on the Assembly to come to the aid of the group.
