Assembly takes steps to supply schools with learning aids

The Asante-Akim District Assembly has taken steps to provide basic schools in the area with adequate teaching and learning aids to ensure smooth academic work.

These include chalk, registers, report cards, teachers’ lesson notebooks and other vital logistics.

Mr. De-graft Fokuo, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said the move would end the situation where delay in the supply of these materials was often used as excuse for non-performance.

He was speaking at a meeting of the District Education Oversight Committee held at Juaso to discuss the audit report on teacher presence and pupils’ enrolment.

The audit carried out at the instance of the Education Minister identified the lack of basic logistics as a major challenge that faced the schools.

Mr. Fokuo said the assembly would do everything to make sure that all the 175 basic schools had access to the needed materials and tools for effective teaching and learning.

The expectation was that the teachers and pupils would do their part by working hard to improve performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Mr. Ere-Der confirmed that his office had received large quantity of chalk and already distributed these to the schools.

He applauded the assembly for its support and vowed to strengthen supervision in schools.

He spoke of an arrangement for Circuit Supervisors to spend three days at the circuit centres, every month, to monitor activities in schools under their watch.

This, he said, had become necessary because of the difficulty of transporting the supervisors daily to the various schools.
