Accra, March 26, GNA - The Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Administration of the Agbogbloshie Central Market are undertaking a week-long clean-up under the code name: "Clean Environment, Healthy Trading".
Speaking at the beginning of the exercise, Nii Akwei Oklemekuku, Executive Director of the Market, said the four-hour daily exercise, the first of its kind at the market was being supported by Accra Metro Waste Department with tipper trucks.
It has also provided three waste disposal sites at vantage points to ensure continuous cleanliness.
Nii Akwei said the initiative was to complement the declaration by Mr Adjiri Blankson, Chief Executive of the AMA, to rid the city of filth.
The Executive Director donated wheel borrows and other equipment to the sub-metro for its sanitation exercise, saying, the administration was repairing an abandoned waste disposal power-tiller mini tractor for waste disposal at the market.
He appealed to the people to stop throwing waste into drains and urged them to patronise the three 33 seater toilets and urinal facilities situated at vantage places at the market.
A Task-force had been formed to arrest anyone found throwing waste into the gutters.
Madam Aishetu Klorkor Quaye, one of the market leaders appealed to the AMA to expand the market since there was large space available. She noted that the unplanned construction of sheds has made it difficult for vehicles to drive in to discharge goods.
She said trading at the roadside to "catch the first customer" instead of doing business inside the market was creating a problem, saying, "the only solution to this problem is the construction of a new shed.
