Assin Manso (C/R), Dec 1, GNA - Barima Kwame Nkyi XI, Paramount Chief of Assin Apimanim Traditional Area, at the weekend celebrated the 40th anniversary on his ascension to the throne, with a call on the kingmakers to desist from rampant destoolment of chiefs. He said the rampant destoolment of chiefs would not create an enabling environment for peace and stability and would retard the needed progress in the traditional area.

Addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of Assin Apimanim at Assin Manso, Barima Nkyi said the continuous piling of pressure on the chiefs to abdicate their stools by kingmakers would not help the traditional area to achieve its aims and objectives.

He called for cooperation and unity among the chiefs and the people in the area, adding that, without peace and understanding the development agenda for Assin Apimanim would never be implemented. Barima Nkyi, who was installed in September 1968, and was one time President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, urged chiefs and kingmakers to tolerate each other since that was the only way that development could take place.

The Omanhene said the substantial amounts of money spent on dispute could be channelled into some development projects. On the Elections, Barima Nkyi noted that the nation needed peace to develop, and expressed the hope that Sunday's Presidential and Parliamentary elections would be held in a peaceful manner devoid of violence and chaos. He cautioned the political leaders to preach about human development and other issues rather than attack each other at rallies, which did not augur well for the growth of the country's democracy. Mrs Millicent Kurankye, Assin South District Chief Executive said the government would not interfere in chieftaincy matters, to enable the noble institution to play its vital role to promote and protect the interest of chiefs in the country. She called for unity and progress among the chiefs in the traditional area, adding that the government would continue to do her part, but the onerous depended on the owners of the chieftaincy institution to make it a successful.

The DCE commended Barima Nkyi for 40th year on the stool that had brought the Traditional area and district as a whole to a limelight, adding that Assin Manso has been hooked to the internet because of the Emancipation celebration created by the Omanhene. Mrs Kurankye urged the people to vote for the party, which could solve their problems and not those which preach violence and chaos in their campaign.

She stated that it was unfortunate that some political leaders had described the December 7, elections as a do and die affair, saying that election was about decision making and not war as others perceived. Dr Kofi Kondwani, Associate Professor of More House College of Medicine in Atlanta, USA was installed as the development chief of Assin Manso with the stool name Nana Kofi Amoah, I. Nana Amoah swore the oath of allegiance to Barima Nkyi and other divisional chiefs. On his part, Nana Amoah pledged that he would do everything possible to bring development to Assin Manso and other towns in the traditional area.
