Assin students launch programme to improve education

Assin Nsuta (C/R), June 7, GNA - Fourteen Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the Assin District of the Central Region scored zero percent in the 2003 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In this regard, the Assin Students and Associates of the University of Education Winneba and the University of Cape Coast on Sunday launched an education campaign to improve the situation.

Under the programme, the students with the assistance of the Assin District Assembly would use their two weeks' vacation to teach in some selected JSS in the district and also sensitise the people on the dangers of the HIV/AIDS among others.

Launching the programme, scheduled to start from Monday, June 7, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mr Anthony Arthur, said the assembly had within the past few years sponsored 56 teachers to the training college and that they were currently teaching in the district. He appealed to the people to come together as one body towards the development of the district. They should also honour their tax obligations to enable the assembly to generate more revenue for development projects.

Mr William Adjei-Bannin, Central Regional Co-ordinator of the National Disaster management Organisation (NADMO), told the people to shun divisive tendencies.

Dr Tony Atta-Bosompim, Patron of the UCC branch, said because of the low standard of education in the area, only a handful of Assin students were able to make it to the university and other tertiary institutions and therefore, urged both students and parents to take education very serious.
