Association institutes sponsorship for students

Bawiesibai (U/W), April 26, GNA -The Bawiesibai Development Association has instituted an incentive package for students and teachers in basic schools in the area to strengthen bond of relationship between teachers and students as well as members of the community.

Under the package, students who score between aggregate six and aggregate 10 in the Basic Education Certificate Examination, the association would sponsor that student to the senior high school. Mr. Ahmed Abdulai Ballah, the President of the association, said this at the 7th annual general meeting of the association at Bawiesibai in the Sissala East District on Monday.

He said the association would also sponsor any student in the area to tertiary institution if he or she comes out with good grades at the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). Teachers would also be awarded adequately with cash if a student in his or her class scores aggregates between one and two in any of the subjects he or she teaches at the Junior High School. All hard working teachers, either in the classroom, sporting activities or any other activity that would help change the attitude and practices of the people would also be graciously awarded, Mr. Ballah said.

Mr. Ballah said the association had committed its resources to schools to enhance quality teaching and learning and as well as motivate teachers to stay in the communities and teach. The association therefore donated textbooks, cooking utensils, a motor cycle and a computer to the Bawiesibai Junior High School while it also donated teacher's handbooks for its nursery unit. He said solar lamps had been provided for teachers' residence and the delivery ward of the community clinic and efforts were being made to support the nurse with means of transport.

Mr Ballah mentioned inadequate teachers and poor results in the Basic Education Certificate Examination as some of the challenges facing schools in the area.

He expressed disappointment at the poor nature of roads linking the communities in the area to Wa East District and Sissala East District and appealed to the government to consider rehabilitating them.
