Manso-Nkwanta (Ash), March 17, GNA- The Ashanti Regional Association of Assembly Women on Monday organised a day's sensitisation seminar for women at Manso-Nkwanta in the Amansie West district. It was aimed at uniting and promoting the welfare of women and children and to sensitise them to take active interest in what was happening around them so that they could be elected to the district assemblies to increase the number of assembly women in the region. Over 500 women including assemblywomen from seven districts of the region including the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Amansie East and West, Ahafo-Ano South, Afigya-Sekyere, Sekyere West and Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma attended the programme.
Speaking at the function, Mr Ben Kwakye-Adeefe, Amansie West District Chief Executive commended the assembly women for coming together to form the association to whip up enthusiasm among women to take active interest in politics, explain government's policies to the people and making the welfare of women and children one of their major concerns.
He assured them of the assembly's support in their sensitisation programmes and asked them not to be deterred in their determination to champion the cause of women and children.
The DCE appealed to the people to embrace the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by paying their premium when it takes off. Mrs Nana Akua Afriyie, President of the Association appealed to parents to invest more in the education of their children especially the girls instead of spending the little resources they have on unprofitable ventures.
She urged women in the region to register in their numbers to enable them vote for people of their choice at the December poll. Mrs Christiana Arthur, assemblywoman for Manso-Mim regretted the increase in teenage pregnancies in the district and attributed this to poverty.
She therefore entreated mothers to stop spending their resources on funerals and the buying of expensive cloths and rather invests the money in profitable ventures so as to be able to take good care of their children especially their girls to prevent them from being lured by money into having sex, which could result in pregnancies.
