Nkawie-Ashanti, March 09, GNA - The Atwima-Nwabiagya District Assembly on Monday honoured some basic and second-cycle institutions, which excelled in academic and sporting disciplines as part of activities to mark the 49th independence anniversary celebrations at Nkawie.
Nkawie Senior Secondary/Technical School, which came first in the Ashanti regional zone one athletics competition, was presented with a silver cup and 1.5 million cedis cash.
Saint Lisbert International School at Abuakwa which placed first in the district at the Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) was given one million cedis cash while the assembly's Experimental School at Nkawie which placed second was given 600,000 cedis cash. Neumann International School at Abuakwa that took the third position was given 400,000 cedis cash.
Mr Benito Owusu-Bio, Member of Parliament for Atwima-Nwabiagya, announced that 10 students in senior secondary schools and five in the universities had benefited from a scholarship scheme instituted last year.
The scheme he said, was being financed through his share of the common fund and would be extended to more brilliant but needy pupils within the district.
Mr Owusu-Bio later launched an essay competition among basic school pupils under the topic: "The Significance of Independence Day."
