Wurapong (Ash), Oct. 28, GNA - The Atwima District Assembly has put up a three-unit living accommodation for teachers at Wurapong at the cost of 222 million cedis under the Social Investment Fund (SIF). Each unit consists of three bedrooms, a store, bathroom and toilet and will accommodate nine teachers. Mr Samuel Berko, secretary of the building implementation committee, announced this when he led Mr Baffour Asare-Bediako, an Assistant Director of Education at the Atwima District Education Directorate to inspect the project on Wednesday. Mr Berko, who is a teacher at the local basic school, said the project would solve the accommodation problem facing teachers posted to the area.
Mr G. Opoku-Agyemang, the head teacher said many of the teachers commuted daily to school from Offinso, a distance of about 10 kilometres due to the lack of accommodation in the area. He commended the Atwima District Assembly and the District Education Directorate for their support and assistance, which had improved teaching and learning in the school. Mr Asare-Bediako advised the teachers to justify the huge sums of money invested in the improvement of educational facilities in the area by working hard to improve upon last year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.
Mr Asare-Bediako, who later met the School Management Committee (SMC), Unit Committee members, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), chief and elders and other opinion leaders of Adagya, a small farming community near Wurapong, advised them to intensify the enrolment and retention drive.
He also urged them to initiate priority educational programmes to enable them to benefit from the district assembly and other donor agencies' assistance. Mr Isaac Oppong, the Adagya SMC chairman, said the major problem of the community was the provision of decent living accommodation for teachers posted to the area and appealed to the assembly to assist them.
