Avenor residents happy with dredging of Odaw drains

The residents of Avenor, a suburb of Accra, has expressed happiness following the massive dredging of the Odaw drains by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

They described the work as a big relief, which has prevented flooding during the recent heavy down pour and commended the AMA.

The residents expressed their joy at a durbar at Avenue addressed by Mr Thomas Mustapha Ashong, the Presiding Member of the AMA.

Mr Ashong warned the people to stop dumping refuse in drains while assuring that the AMA would continue with the work to ensure free-flow of the water when it rains.

He said this would go a long way to also avert serious health problems of the residents close to the drains and appealed to them to attach great importance to environmental sanitation.

Mr Alfred A. Adjei, the Assemblyman for Avenor, asked the people to let healthy environment be their major concern.

He appealed to the AMA to provide one of the millennium schools at Avenor at the proposed school site to bring educational face-lift to the people.

Mr Adjei disclosed that a sanitation taskforce would be formed to stringently enforce the AMA environmental bye-laws in the community

There would be an Avenor Electoral Area Educational Fund to help address educational needs of the children, he said, adding: “I will solicit support from factories in the area to assist the Fund.”

Mr Oscar Tagoe, the Chairman of the Avenor Water and Sanitation Board called on the residents to support the AMA in its efforts at ensuring sound sanitary practices.
