The Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) on Tuesday warned the general public to stop dumping solid and liquid waste into drains.
Dumping of solid waste into major drains, especially in Accra, is a major contributing factor to the annual flooding, the GRNA stated in a statement, jointly signed by Mr Kwaku Asante-Krobea and Mrs Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, the President and General Secretary respectively.
“We entreat government to ensure that our cities are provided with proper drainage systems. This would forestall the perennial flooding in various part of the country.
“We expect that Government would take steps to ensure that citing of fuel stations in densely populated areas are avoided and all safety measures put in place,” the GRNA statement stated.
The GRNA also expressed its deepest condolence to the families of those who lost their lives through the disaster, especially two nurses from the Ridge Hospital, Emefa Agbamatu and Harriet Bamfo; Rotation Midwife and Staff Nurse respectively.
“We also extend our condolences to our colleagues and management of Ridge Hospital where the nurses worked. We are working together with the families of the late Nurses and the Hospital management to give the nurses a befitting burial,” the statement said.
The GRNA statement commended the security services and all other volunteers, who made efforts to rescue the victims from the disaster and have continued to support the victims.
