Mampong Ashanti, Nov. 9, GNA - Mr. Haruna Oppong-Boateng, the Sekyere West District Executive, has called on Ghanaians to eschew the habit of reading politics into the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) since that has the tendency to undermine its inherent gains. He said "the resolve to lift the continent from its economic doldrums requires the collective efforts every citizen and the moment politics is introduced into the agenda the tenacity of purpose of the people will be weakened."
Mr. Oppong-Boateng was speaking at the opening ceremony of the APRM country report and programme of action dissemination report for stakeholders in the Ashanti Region at Asante Mampong in the Sekyere West District on Wednesday.
The workshop, organized by the National APRM Governing Council in collaboration with the National Centre for Civic Education, was attended by over 150 civil society organizations from Kwabre, Afigya -Sekyere, Sekyere West and Ajura-Sekyere Dumase district of Ashanti.
He said what Ghanaians ought to understand was that the APRM process was not an assessment of the performance of the government or any individual to warrant a score chat.
"People must therefore refrain from claiming successes and apportioning blame since such assertions will not be in the nation's interest" he said.
Mrs. Fanny Kumah of the NCCE said the NCCE would continue to collaborate with the council in their programmes and activities since the ripple effects of set goals and development of Ghana cannot be over stressed.
She said District APRM committees would be formed in the regions to support the dissemination and monitoring of the APRM process. 09 Nov 06
