Awutu-Effutu-Senya Assembly to privatise waste management

Winneba, July 27, GNA- The Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly has decided to engage private waste management companies to help manage environmental sanitation in the district.

Mr. Solomon Abbam-Quaye, District Chief Executive (DCE), said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Winneba. According to the DCE private companies would be made to register with the Assembly by paying a commitment fee to be determined by it. Then the details of rate to be paid by households or individuals would also discussed after which an agreement would be signed to guide the whole operation to make it a success.

On revenue generation of the assembly, the DCE said the continuous operation of the Kasoa Zongo market has a negative effect on the assembly's revenue mobilization drive since revenue being collected there presently were not going to the assembly.

Mr. Abbam-Quaye in this regard urged those who have the development of Kasoa at heart to persuade the traders to move from the place since it was illegal for them to continue doing business there. "It is expected that they would move so that the assembly could develop the place, adding that, the area would eventually be turned into slum if the market is not moved from there".

The DCE said the Assembly has decided to re-settle Sawn millers in Kasoa at Opeikuma and connect the Obom and Bawjiase roads to ease congestion in and around Kasoa.

He said the Assembly would also construct roads in residential areas in Kasoa, Winneba and Bawjiase. 27 July 07
