BASU urged to let peace, unity be its hallmark

Winneba (C/R), Dec. 4, GNA - Professor Akwasi Asabere Ameyaw, Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, has advised members of various ethnic based student unions in tertiary institutions to let the spirit of unity and peace guide them in all their activities. He said if members of such organized student groups cultivated and maintained these moral qualities, they would become "the star of hope" for the people and strong pillars on which the socio-cultural, economic and spiritual development of their communities would evolve. It would also help them to make the desired impact on nation building while still in school.

Prof. Ameyaw was interacting with the national executives of the Brong Ahafo Students Union (BASU) that called at Winneba on Monday to congratulate him on his appointment as Vice Chancellor of the UEW. He emphasized the need for Ghanaians to always think of what they could individually and collectively do to advance national development rather than what the nation could offer them. Prof. Ameyaw thanked the Union for presenting him a "Twi" version of the Holy Bible and a wall clock and assured them that he would make full use of the contents of the Bible to strengthen his faith, trust and confidence in God.

He admitted that his new appointment demanded total transformation of his lifestyle to enable him to cope with the numerous challenges it might pose, but was optimistic that God would provide him the wisdom, understanding, encouragement and spiritual guidance and protection to discharge all this important national assignment successfully.

Prof. Ameyaw also expressed his appreciation for the chiefs and opinion leaders in Brong-Ahafo for extending heart-warming messages to him on his appointment and promised that he would work diligently to meet their expectation.

"I cannot afford to disappoint my relatives, friends and well wishers because the honour done me by the government has placed me on a high pedestal."

Mr C B Boachie, a patron of the BASU and spokesman for the delegation told the Vice Chancellor that by his elevation to the highest position, he had carved an excellent image not only for himself and immediate relations, but the entire people of Brong Ahafo. Mr Boachie said members of BASU would join hands with traditional rulers and religious leaders in the Region to pray for divine blessing, wisdom, protection and spiritual guidance for the Vice Chancellor to enable him to accomplish the tasks ahead.

He said BASU regarded him as the Region's number one role model and mentor that the youth would look up to him to develop their God-given talents.

Mr Boachie said as a staunch Christian, Prof. Ameyaw might possess several versions of the Holy Bible, but that the one BASU presented to him was to keep him constantly reminded of the need to always get closer to God.
