Sunyani, April 24, GNA - Supervisors at this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the various centres within Sunyani Municipality which began on Monday have described the first day as "smooth sailing" and without much problems, except for the rains in the morning that nearly marred the English Language paper. The atmosphere at centres visited by the GNA was calm and conducive for the examination.

At the Sunyani Secondary School Centre 'A', five out of the 333 registered candidates, made up of 148 boys and 185 girls, failed to turn up for the examination.

At centre 'B', 309 candidates of made up of 164 boys and 145 girls were

registered to take the paper but three of them were absent. At centre 'C', 213 students made up of 106 boys and 107 girls registered to take the examination but three did not turn up and the officials could not assign reasons for their failure to show up. The Supervisors reported of high confidence among the candidates, who were law abiding and did not pose much problems to invigilators. There was an absentee candidate at Twene Amanfo Secondary Technical

School Centre 'A' where 247 registered candidates made up of 128 boys and 119 girls registered to write the examination. Mr Isaac Adjapong, Supervisor in charge of the centre said 32 students complained of errors in the spelling of their names that was not peculiar to the centre. He said the matter had been reported to authorities of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to take up the issue in order that changes associated with the wrong spelling of names of candidates could be rectified and not reflect on their certificates. At Centre 'B', all the 279 students made up of 149 boys and 130 girls who registered for the examination were present. Two out of the 282 registered candidates at Centre 'C' were absent.

Although three policemen were detailed to each of the examination centres, there was only a policeman for all the three. 24 April 06
