Nyinahin (Ash), Dec. 15, GNA - Sixteen deaths including seven pregnant women had been recorded at Wansamire in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti within the past three months due to their inability to have medical care as a result of the lack of transport. Nine out of the 16 died from serious illnesses, while the seven pregnant women died through childbirth.
Nana Owusu Achiaw, Chief of Wansamire, who disclosed these to the Ghana News Agency at Nyinahin at the weekend, attributed these calamities to the deplorable state of the six kilometres Sreso-Wansamire Achiase road.
Besides the deplorable state of the road he said, two culverts built over the Awam and Akakosua streams had collapsed for more than three years now, forcing vehicles plying the route to suspend their services.
He said cocoa and foodstuffs cannot be carted from the area to the marketing centres and this was affecting them socially and economically. Nanaa Owusu Achiaw has therefore, made a passionate appeal to the Department of Feeder Roads and the Atwima Mponua District Assembly to as a matter of urgency, rehabilitate the road to save his people from further hardships and agony.
The present situation the chief said, was so critical that if nothing was done about it, this would affect their socio-economic lives.
