Bampoe Addo passes away

Accra, Sept 2, GNA - The former Deputy Controller and Accountant General, Mr Michael Bampoe Addo, is reported dead at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on August 22nd after a short illness. The late Mr Bampoe Addo, aka Bojoe, until his death was the head of the Bampoe Addo family and worked as a public servant for over 40 years, a statement signed by his daughter, Nana Oye Lithur, to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday stated.

According to the statement, he entered the Civil Service in April 1943, joining the then State Treasury in November 1944 as second division clerk and rose through the ranks to the position of Deputy Controller and Accountant General of the Account General's Department. He specialised in government accounting, budgeting, auditing and public finance, and was credited with prudent auditing and re-organisation of Ghana's State accounts at various missions including Nigeria, Italy, New York and Washington.

The statement cited the late Bampoe Addo's ingenuity in reconciling inter-colonial accounts between Ghana and Nigeria.

The late Bajoe also served at the Ministry of Trade and was posted to the Commonwealth Trust Limited which formed the nucleus of the Ghana National Trading Corporation (GNTC) as the first accountant to prepare a takeover of that company by the Government of Ghana.

He was also seconded to the Omnibus Services Authority to evolve a corruption-free system within the framework of government accounting procedures, and audited the accounts of the State Fishing Corporation and Italian Shipyards whilst at the Ministry of Agriculture. He also served Ghana on various Commissions of Enquiries, Boards and Committees including the Abraham Commission, Ollenu Commission, External Debt Committee, Computerisation Committee, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Development Committee, Committee on Government Accounts, Export Bonus Committee, Board of Governors of Accra Academy, Board of Stewards of the Accra Turf Club, and Board of Directors of the Faith Evangelical Mission Clinic.
