Barclays marks Literacy Day with Financial Workshop

Tema New Town, Sept. 8, GNA - The Tema branch of Barclays Bank, on Wednesday, organised a financial literacy programme for farmers and fisher-folks in the Metropolis, to educate them on the need to cultivate saving habits.

Briefing newsmen on the workshop, Mrs Audrey Abakah, Branch Manager of the Tema Main Branch of the Bank, said it was in commemoration of the International Literacy Day, proclaimed by UNESCO on September 8, 1965.

On that day, UNESCO uses the occasion to highlight the significance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies, and reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally.

Mrs Abakah observed that, literacy was a human right, a tool of personal empowerment, and a means for social and human development.

She gave the assurance that Barclays Bank would not only use the occasion to educate people in its catchments areas to cultivate saving habits, but to also promote good quality education to equip pupils in those communities with literacy skills and further learning.

Nii Shipi Amarh, Stool Secretary of the Tema Traditional Council said the Council occasionally organized educational programmes for members in the community on sound financial practices.

The aim, he said, was to help them build capacity in their various businesses.

Nii Osongaa Adjei Kraku the Second, Tema Mantse, advised the workshop participants to invest their business profits in viable economic ventures.
