Barekese (Ash), Oct 12, GNA - Some 160 first-year students were on Monday formally admitted to the new Barekese Secondary School as pioneers to pursue a three-year course in science, general arts and business studies.

About 98 per cent of the students were junior secondary school products selected from Barekese, Esaso, Adankwame, Asuofua, Asamang, Barekuma, Achiase, Fufuo, Darbaa, Akropong, Pasro, Kapro and other surrounding communities in the Nwabiagya constituency who obtained between aggregates six and 30.

Welcoming the students, Nana Owusu-Sarfoh Anwona, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nwabiagya Rural Bank, said the bank had spent over 100 million cedis to improve infrastructure in the school.

He said the Atwima District Assembly also voted over 200 million cedis to provide other facilities at the school.

Nana Owusu-Sarfoh said the bank has awarded scholarships to 25 of the students for their three-year course.

The school implementation committee, he said, has recruited qualified and experienced tutors and appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to absorb the school into the public system.

Mr James Adusei-Sarkodie, the Member of Parliament for Atwima-Nwabiagya, said the formal opening of the school was his long-cherished dream that had come to fruition.

He said he has awarded scholarships to 30 students in the area out of which six are in the universities.

The MP presented a computer and its accessories and electric typewriters worth over 15 million cedis to the school management. Nana Kwasi Addai, Adontenhene of Barekese, thanked the GES, Nwabiagya rural Bank and the Atwima district assembly for their support.
